Innovative alternatives to dry ice that maintain LUSH spa's sensory and theatrical magic

LUSH Spa invites solutions which can address the challenge of maintaining the moments of magic created using dry ice within 3 spa treatments. The proposed solution should be either: a direct replacement of dry ice, e.g. making dry ice or a dry ice replacement easily and safely onsite, or a new innovative, wow factor spectacle to impress clients in the treatment room. This could be another form of mist or something completely new.

Background

LUSH opened their first Spa in 2009 and now have 19 spa locations globally (UK, North America, Spain, Dubai, Japan and Korea). There are 10 LUSH spas in the UK.

LUSH Spa offers a multi-sensory spa experience that goes beyond traditional massage by incorporating bespoke music, fragrances, and storytelling to create a holistic treatment. They provide a range of services, including massages, facials, and sound baths, all designed to be both a physical and mental escape. LUSH Spas are designed to feel like a cozy, relaxed "home away from home" rather than a sterile environment.

Key features of a LUSH Spa experience

  • Multi-sensory approach: Treatments are designed to engage all your senses through a combination of massage, custom-composed soundscapes, evocative scents, and specific lighting and moments of surprise and magic.
  • Bespoke soundscapes: unique soundtracks are created for each treatment to enhance the experience.
  • The dry ice used in certain LUSH Spa treatments is a theatrical and sensory element, creating scented mist or fog to enhance the immersive atmosphere of the experience. It is not used for cooling the body or for an "ice room" experience.

Synaesthesia (Signature treatment)

  • Aroma Diffusion: Essential oils corresponding to the client's chosen "intention" or preference are added to the dry ice mixture. As the dry ice bubbles away in a flask or pot, the scented vapor is released, filling the room with the chosen fragrance.

Karma (4 handed massage-2 therapists)

  • Aroma Diffusion: A karma fragranced bath bomb (most loved customer fragrance) is placed on top of dry ice inside a large copper bowl. The therapist pours a large jug of hot water over the bath bomb and dry ice to signify the clients ‘karma being released’  As the dry ice bubbles away in the bowl, the scented vapor is released, filling the room with the iconic orange and patchouli perfume.

Good Hour and Tailor Made (Firm pressure massage)

  • Atmosphere and Theatre: A  large bowl with dry ice inside is placed under the massage bed. The therapists ask the client to drop a big blue (sea themed bath bomb) into a large jug of hot water. The therapist then pours the hot water/bath bomb into the bowl. The dry ice fog billows out from under the bed,  cascading across the floor, to create a mystical sea mist, dream-like, and enchanting environment. This aligns with the "story" or theme of specific treatments.

  • Sensory Experience: The dry ice element is part of Lush's effort to create a multi-sensory journey, often involving sight (the mist), sound (specialised soundtracks), and smell, in addition to the physical touch of the massage or facial. Co-founder Mark Constantine, who has synaesthesia, was heavily involved in designing treatments to allow others to experience the blurring of senses.
