The iX challenge competition, delivered by KTN, is supporting West Northamptonshire Council (WNC) and The Greater South East Net Zero Hub to deliver a project to modify/adapt/transform multistorey car parks in Northamptonshire to be able to generate and distribute energy to electric vehicles while maintaining security and footprint. Responses are invited from single companies or consortia able to provide an entire solution that will lead to a completely integrated system at the site. The winning business(es) in this competition will be given the opportunity to deliver their solution as a partner project.&nbsp; Successful applicants will have the opportunity to present their ideas/solutions to the local authority and potentially work with the project partners to deliver a complete solution in one/both car parks. This project will serve as a pilot for WNC and successful implementation will lead to replicating the solution in other car parks in Northamptonshire.

Introduction

The KTN Innovation Exchange programme is working alongside West Northamptonshire Council and The Greater South East Net Zero Hub to reach out to innovators in the UK with ideas that can utilise multi-storey or surface car parks to establish secure EV charging with dedicated renewable power.&nbsp; The challenge is to design and implement physical hardware solutions that can integrate with existing infrastructure of the St Johns Multi Storey and provide energy generation that can be distributed to EV chargers in a secure way while optimising car parking on the top deck. Trial Site St Johns Multi Storey Car Park is the proposed site which is located to the East of Northampton Town Centre and has 485 number of spaces with a footprint of 4,268 m2. Increasing numbers drivers require car charging and northamptonshire want to use this trial site to demonstrate the impact of an integrated solution.

On deck 11, 9 number of spaces the top deck 11 number of spaces will need to have EV Charge points of 7- 50 kw dependent on grid capacity The site is often full by 10-11 AM.&nbsp;
Project Targets:
West Northamptonshire Council are expecting that the solution provider proposes solutions for energy generation, storage, export &amp; EV charging in a secure way. Energy generation: if a structure is going to be installed on the top deck e.g. solar canopies, this can lead to two challenges that the competitors should investigate and provide solutions for. First, these can create shading areas where crime can proliferate and second, they can reduce useable car parking space, therefore.
<ul>
<li>The structure should include appropriate technology to prevent vandalism and other crime.</li>
<li>The number of columns should be optimised to decrease the possibility of a car accidentally running into to them and to maximise car parking space.</li>
<li>EV charging: depending on capacity and existing wiring. We would appreciate a solution that optimises the space needed for a charger.</li>
<li>Solutions should also think about how to utilise fluxing demand profiles of EV charging and investigate how the energy flow can work into different sites. Using a private wire can be considered.</li>
<li>Solutions should make sure that the chargers are accessible and inclusive for all users.</li>
</ul>
There are a number of documents which can be shared if requested that show the size of the car parks, the electricity demand, grid and other relevant information.
Solutions could come from:
<ul>
<li>Renewable energy innovations (solar, wind etc) that could install capability on the car park roof or within infrastructure to generate electricity</li>
<li>EV charging providers</li>
<li>Technology providers with secure accessible and inclusive solutions</li>
<li>Peak and off-peak managed considerations around energy consumption for example building management, smart controls, links to energy storage.&nbsp;</li>
<li>Storage solutions that could store generated electricity until needed which optimises the use of space.</li>
<li>Novel innovations for capturing energy, such as flywheel</li>
<li>Or a combined approach of all of the above</li>
</ul>
Potential solutions may come from:
<ul>
<li>Construction and infrastructure</li>
<li>Heavy engineering</li>
<li>The energy and power generation sector</li>
<li>The transport sector</li>
<li>Digital and data companies</li>
<li>Organisations with relevant expertise operating in any industry sector</li>
</ul>
Whilst not limiting the technologies from solution providers, it is expected that solutions would consider the following in their application:
<ul>
<li>Solutions must not have a negative impact on the environment or add to the carbon footprint</li>
<li>Solutions should have a solid business case over a 20 year period</li>
<li>Solutions should consider potential planning hurdles and potential grid constraints and developmental costs</li>
<li>Solutions that are not demonstrated within this environment must be well developed and offer an attractive payback to be considered by West Northamptonshire Council</li>
<li>Health and safety issues must be clearly identified before installation as these are public spaces</li>
</ul>
Proposals through the IX process will be considered in relation to the ability to match the specification of the project. West Northamptonshire Council will not consider solutions that involve:&nbsp;
<ul>
<li>Use of Fossil fuels</li>
<li>Untested/under developed technologies (low TRL)</li>
<li>Long payback periods&nbsp;</li>
</ul>

Successful applicants will be given an opportunity to pitch to the Challenger. The package may also include: 
<ul>
<li>Capital investment from West Northamptonshire Council to deploy the solution</li>
<li>Support from the Catapult networks and the KTN</li>
<li>Support in the implementation of a pilot or system</li>
<li>Technical support</li>
<li>Invitation to attend or present at KTN&nbsp; or Catapult events</li>
<li>Help and support from the Greater South East Net Zero Hub</li>
<li>A potential business collaboration</li>
<li>Investor introductions (if investment is required)</li>
</ul>

Rewards & Benefits

<li>Provider Requirements (not expected at ideation stage)</li>
<li>Work with West Northamptonshire Council to develop a proposal for the implementation of the service or technology to be provided. The proposal should set out how this will support achievement of the stated goals with clear information on how progress will be monitored.</li>
<li>The proposal should confirm the benefits of the of the proposal alongside the confirmed costs for implementation.</li>
<li>Provide the technology and/or services as set out in the proposal agreed with SHC Team.</li>
<li>Provide information as necessary to enable the dissemination of project output. This could relate to energy consumption changes, energy generation, charge/discharge and energy cost savings.</li>
<li>Provide Project Activity Report detailing monitored outputs as agreed in the proposal.</li>
<li>To ensure that all communication measures or public facing elements of the project include the correct acknowledgments for the supporting bodies (including EU logos). More details will be available within the Programme guidance.</li>
</ul>

Solution Requirements

<ul>
<li>Bids are welcome from organisations prepared to work collaboratively, who wish to establish sub-contracts or who have established legal partnerships as defined in the Partnerships Act 1890. However, West Northamptonshire Council can only contract with a single organisation who must act as the 'Lead Organisation' on behalf of all other members of the consortium. This means that the Lead Organisation takes responsibility for full performance of the contract.</li>

Eligibility & Assessment Criteria

<li>Existing background IP associated with a potential solution will remain with Solution Provider(s). Where any new IP generation is envisaged, it will be subject to the mutual IP agreement of the Solution Provider(s) and Innovation Challenger.</li>
<li>Any commercial deployment of transferred solution or newly developed solution, through licensing, joint venture, partnership or direct investment, will be subject to the commercial agreement between the Solution Provider(s) and Innovation Challenger.</li>
<li>Where necessary, a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) may be signed to uphold confidentiality in the engagement between the Solution Provider(s) and Innovation Challenger.</li>
<li>Innovate UK and Innovate UK KTN do not take any share of IP ownership or enter into commercial venture through the iX programme.</li>
